When Kendra’s mother came home from work, the first thing she saw was her daughter ruffling a familiar face’s hair out of place as they sat on the carpeted living room floor, while the girl who was over at their house at least twice a week grinned with a huge, silly, toothy smile and swatted her daughter’s hand away before pulling her daughter in for a brief kiss. Quietly, Kendra’s mother made her way to the kitchen, letting the two have their moment of peace before interrupting them, asking if they wanted anything to drink.

She thought she saw the glimmer of happiness behind her daughter’s eyes, but said nothing when Arian blushed like crazy and looked at the coffee table as if it was the most interesting thing in the world.
