I

One night
a burning start
looked down –
past clouds
past mountains –
to stare at Earth
and pity us.

One night
a man looked up
at the vast
emptiness
of the void above
and saw a star
and caught its eye

II

Stars are capable
of many things:
they can walk
our roads
but for a short while.

And this star
dreamed and hoped
of meeting this man
who had taken the time
to look at her.

She dreamed
and hoped
and fell through the clouds.

III

She showed him wonders
no human eye had ever seen.
She took his hand
and led him
around the world and to the sky.

He took her hand
and showed her
that the Earth –
the soil he treaded –
was beautiful.

IV

She often found herself
wondering
“Why is he getting older?”

V

He was so tired.
but he was there.
he spoke and held her hand
and loved her.
but why
was
he
so
tired?

VI

In our night sky
there is a star
who looks at humanity
and weeps –
not out of pity –
but out of love
for one she no longer
can hold hands with

and every year
I see her light
